Hi there,

I uploaded the final version of Zenwalk Live 7.4 which has updated openssl-packages to fix the heartbleed issue and some other small fixes.

You can get the ISO from here:

http://zenwalk.pinguix.com/user-account ... .4-dvd.iso
http://zenwalk.pinguix.com/user-account ... .4-dvd.md5

This is the first Zenwalk Live version that is NOT utillizing an AUFS
enabled kernel but instead running unionfs in userspace via fuse on an
unmodified Slackware generic kernel!

It will also be probably the _last_ Zenwalk Live version supporting
32bit systems and it's gonna be very likely the last Zenwalk Live Edition that I do
contribute to the Zenwalk project. :'(

Same as in Zenwalk Live 7.2 I decided to feature PAE for supporting more
than 4 GB RAM on 32bit, but as a down side Zenwalk Live will not run on
Pentium M (which lacks PAE support).

Also in order to support additional locales and some extra content
the ISO does not fits on a CD-ROM anymore, so same as last time
it's a DVD-ROM ISO release again.

As an extra feature I have splitted the base system having xfce now as a
seperate live module which allows you to even run Zenwalk Live Fluxbox Edition
exclusively (without xfce4), just specify exclude=03-xfce.sxz desktop=fluxbox
as a boot parameter

As usual Zenwalk Live comes with full support for Japanese language
featuring universal input method (UIM) and the anthy conversion engine.
It is powered by the latest Slackware-Live-Scripts (thanks to Frank
Endres, the developer of this superb framework!).

Finally overall polishing and an out-of-the-box user experience and an
easy to customize or rebuild live system is what you can expect from
Zenwalk Live 7.4.

The Zenwalk Live user manual has been revised and is included in the ISO.

Have fun!

Please note: Zenwalk Live is not supporting uefi yet,
so on uefi systems set your firmware to legacy mode in order to boot Zenwalk Live.

Am downloading ...

So : congratulations and thank you.

But why : " it's gonna be very likely the last Zenwalk Live Edition that I do contribute to the Zenwalk project. :'(" ???

LiveCDs remain important. More and more people seem to forget ...

Hope to come back with more comments and questions after testing.

Have a nice day.

...developing and testing a live system needs a lot of effort and is time cosuming, especially if you do it as a one man project.
I don't know if I will have those ressources in the future.
Also since Zenwalk is droping 32bit support from the next release onwards (a decision that I can understand and that might be neccesary as a modern distribution needs to go with the time) so I would have to deal with uefi but I don't have 64bit testing systems,
and on a 32 bit host I cannot run a 64bit virtual machine, so that is a simple technical matter.
And finally, I don't like to say that but (certainly due to the lack of man power and contributors) Zenwalk's quality has dropped in the last few years and it's future seems to be uncertain.
I don't blame anybody because I know how hard it is to take care of addressing all issues with only a small team and limited resources, that can be quite frustrating.
Anyway, I am not saying I leave the project, I contributed to Zenwalk for a long time first as a packager then after zenlive team left I took over and developed in total 4 Zenwalk Live releases, I think it's now time to take a break. ;-)

So in short, due to several reasons I cannot do ZenLive releases on a regular base anymore, I _might_ do some customization flavor of ZenLive from time to time though X!!

Zenwalk is still one of my favourite distributions! <3

So I have to say thank you to the Zenwalk team and Zenwalk community for all their effort making and contributing to Zenwalk.
I will be still around. ;-)

Thank you for your honest reply. Thank you very much.

Can only say that if understand fully your point of view. A LiveCD shouldn't be "a one man project." And you need the necessary resources.

Nevertheless I had a look at the iso and found it is made in a different way. Now the 'modules' and 'optional' directories are immediately in /boot where formerly they were in a directory called 'zenlive'. Formerly also It was easy to have a 'frugal install' of the iso on a hard disk as you could use a 'from=' bootcode.

Is it now still possible to do a a 'frugal install' and specify where to look for the necessary directories?

Thank you for kind attention.

Regards,

You refering to the old zenlive, wich was done by the former Zenlive team.
At this time they used "Linux-Live-scripts" as a framework to build the live cd.
But since I have overtaken Zenlive it is no longer based on "Linux-Live-scripts" but is powered by "Slackware-Live-Scripts" which is the framework of Zenlive since version 6.4.
So if you are now wondering about those changes, you probably missed the last 4 Zenlive releases... ;-p

As a live system it's focus is not on beeing used as installation medium although it is possible to install Zenlive onto hdd from the running live session!

I hope that answers your question.

Have fun!
